Succesful summer for REU students at CPL

The Computational Physiology Lab (CPL) is proud to announce that its REU student, Adina-Raluca Stoica has won the best poster award in the 2008 REU poster competition. She was involved in the stress quantification project under the supervision of Dr. Dvijesh Shastri, Research Assistant Professor at CPL. Adina has developed a novel perspiration quantification method in thermal imaging that may find broad applications in computational psychology. Click here to view the winning poster.
Prof. Pavlidis, director of CPL, noted: “It is interesting that Adina is the youngest student in this year’s REU lot – she is only a sophomore and was competing against seniors. It is an example that talent, hard work, and good management and support can work wonders and change the order of the world.">
CPL was also training-ground for a senior REU student who worked on fusion of thermal and visual imaging data and two high school students who were involved in inspiring research work. Most of the REU students who passed through CPL in previous years are now with Graduate Schools around the country, fulfilling the goal of the program.
Undergraduates participating in this summer research program with CPL were funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF) through a Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) site grant (http://www.cbl.uh.edu/~reu/) led by Prof. Stephen Huang.

Prof. Pavlidis receives a new NSF award

Prof. Pavlidis (Principal Investigator) from the Computational Physiology Lab in collaboration with Prof. Barbara Bass from the Surgery Department of the Methodist Hospital (Co-investigator) and Prof. Marc Garbey from the Modeling and Computational Science Lab (Co-Investigator) have won an award from the National Science Foundation's Human Centered Computing (HCC) program. The award is at the level of $450,000 and is entitled "Do Nintendo Surgeons Defy Stress?

NSF Awarded a REU Grant to Computer Science Department

The National Science Foundation (NSF) awarded a REU Site grant to the Computer Science Department of the University of Houston recently.

This is the second REU awarded to the group of computer science professors consists of Drs. Huang, Leiss, Kakadiaris, Pavlidis, and Verma.

25th Annual Houston Conference on Biomedical Engineering Research -- HSEMB 2008

Paper submitted to the Houston Society for Engineering in Medicine and Biology (HSEMB) 2008 Conference has been assigned to the oral session - Medical Imaging and Image Analysis II.
